WILHELM AUTOMOTIVE PEORIA SHOP FINALIZING RENOVATIONS
Peoria, Ariz.—Wilhelm Automotive, a family owned and operated auto repair business, will finalize renovations on its oldest facility in Peoria this month. The shop has been on public tax records since 1917, and operated as an auto repair business since the 1920s. The Peoria location is about 17,500 square feet and employs 20 staff members, making itPeoria Shop Renovation the largest of their five current locations.
This most recent renovation has been in progress since 2006, when the decision was made to upgrade the building’s façade, a change that was approved by the City of Peoria and their downtown redevelopment project. Thom Gyder, Wilhelm Automotive Chairman, and the Wilhelm Automotive team have worked closely with the City of Peoria and the downtown redevelopment since the 1980s.
The biggest change to the facility will be the move of the reception area of the shop to the main repair building, which also houses the company’s headquarters
Gyder said the team is very careful to be mindful of this long history of the buildings, and will salvage as much of old buildings and facades as possible.
“We will reuse and retain historically relevant features as much as possible in the renovation, including building bricks, signage, and old glass insulators,” Gyder said.
During the renovation process, Gyder said they also discovered that all of the drainage features had to be upgraded, which would have to be facilitated by the City of Peoria. Additionally, the old power lines which were still up above the roofs had to be moved and buried.
“I really thank the Peoria city council and mayor for their foresight and commitment to this project. It would not be possible without their support, and we are proud to continue to be a part of Peoria’s heritage,” Gyder said.
The physical phase of the renovation project began last August, and is scheduled to be complete by the beginning of April. The public is invited to a Grand Re-opening celebration at all the store locations on Saturday, April 16, 2011 (event details coming soon).
