The Hybrid Shop® offers a full range of battery conditioning and replacement services for your hybrid vehicle needs.

Here are descriptions of some of the battery services available at The Hybrid Shop® for the nickel-metal hydride (NiMH ) batteries that are found in HEVs.

Hybrid Battery Conditioning (reconditioning) – In this service, the battery pack is removed from the vehicle and the NiMH (nickel-metal hydride) cores are run through a Power test and an Energy test to determine its overall State-of-Health (SOH). It is then subjected to an exclusive discharge and charge process to increase cell capacity and energy output. Failing components and individual cells can be identified and replaced as needed. Other battery components that support the battery pack system are checked for proper operation. The battery is then placed back into the vehicle, and the customer can look forward to many years of improved performance and efficiency. This service can be repeated as necessary over the life of the car with no adverse effects on the battery pack. (Click here learn more about how this process works.)

Hybrid Battery Replacement with New Battery – Hybrid Shop technicians can replace a complete battery pack with a new one. The battery pack is removed and replaced with new battery modules, contactors/relays, current sensor, pre-charge system, battery controller, bus bars, temperature sensors, air temperature sensors and a new battery carrier (mounting) system. Putting a new battery into a hybrid vehicle is not only the most expensive option to consider, but it is also the most harmful to the environment because the old battery goes into the waste stream. The Hybrid Shop highly recommends its battery conditioning service as a cost-effective, environmentally-friendly alternative.

Hybrid Battery Replacement with Used Battery – Hybrid Shop technicians can replace original hybrid batteries with used batteries that contain no new components. For peace of mind, however, we recommend our Power test and Energy test to analyze any battery’s complete State-of-Health and to determine if maintenance or repairs need to be done. Vehicle owners may then have the option to purchase individual battery modules or components if necessary.

Hybrid Battery Replacement with Rebuilt Battery – Rebuilt batteries contain replacement parts which may or may not have been tested or conditioned prior to being placed into service. The Hybrid Shop suggests that anyone choosing this option has the battery undergo thorough diagnostic testing. The Hybrid Shop’s SOH report can inform a consumer about the status of a rebuilt battery and offer recommendations for maintenance or repair as necessary.

How much do these services cost?

The cost for the services described above starts at around $1,500 and can go as high as $5,000 or more. This can vary based on your vehicle make and model, and the condition of your battery. Battery conditioning will always be less expensive and more environmentally friendly than a new battery. For more details about these costs, click here,

Why does a hybrid battery need to be conditioned or replaced?

The nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) hybrid batteries in hybrid vehicles (HEV’s) experience a loss of power, energy & capacity over time. This is a natural and inherent characteristic of NiMH batteries. It’s not a matter of IF the battery’s performance will decrease, but WHEN.

When does a hybrid battery need to be conditioned or replaced?

The following issues indicate that your hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) would benefit from a conditioning service:

Poor Gas Mileage: If you’re noticing your HEV’s gas mileage isn’t as effective as it once was, there is a very good chance your battery needs to be looked at.

Lack of Power: If you’re struggling to find the power to get over hills and accelerate as you once did, then you likely have a battery issue.

Your HEV is about 4-8 years old and has been driven about 50k miles since its last conditioning service. (These are average figures and can vary depending on where you live and how your car is driven.) HEVs that are consistently driven at 50-70 mph or are operated regularly in extreme weather may need to be conditioned more often. The Hybrid Shop’s dealer partners are able to provide more details.

Because your HEV’s service light will generally not turn on when your battery starts to under perform, it’s important that you stay aware of your vehicle’s gas mileage and performance. Changes in either may be the first indication that a service is needed.

The Hybrid Shop’s international network of dealer partners is trained by the top HEV scientists and leaders in the world. Our singular goal is to ensure that your vehicle operates at peak performance with the lowest cost to you. Whether you opt for our exclusive conditioning service or you need a full battery replacement, we’re here to solve any issue that brings your HEV down.

Hybrid Repair & Maintenance Services on All Makes & Models. ASE Certified and Master Technicians.

To keep your vehicle operating at peak performance and fuel efficiency, all of its systems need to be in good working order and in balance with each other. Outside of the electric power components, HEVs and EVs contain the same systems as traditional combustion engines – from brakes and tires to heating and cooling – and if one part is stressed, other systems suffer.

That’s why The Hybrid Shop® offers complete maintenance and repair services for the whole vehicle. Below is a sampling of some of the services offered by our dealer partners.

  • Complete computer diagnostic test. Our cutting-edge technology ensures fast and accurate diagnosis of issues.
  • Battery power & energy test. Your battery will be removed. Testing includes one conditioning sequence and provides a documented, baseline report of performance and predictive data to plan for upcoming services.
  • Electrical systems inspection. Every element of the system is carefully inspected to identify existing and potential future abnormalities.
  • Wire and cable check. Technicians thoroughly inspect all cable sheaths and wires for cuts and tears.
  • Tire analysis. Tires are inspected for proper pressure and potential wear patterns. We also review your tire type to ensure you have the best, low-rolling resistance tire for maximum efficiency.
  • Complete vehicle inspection. We look at every system – from conventional to hybrid-specific – and let you know what needs attention now and what may need attention down the road.
  • Air Conditioning service
