Squeaking Car Brakes

Squeaking Car Brakes

Here's a very common question we get about the noises the car brakes can make, and what they might mean. I notice my breaks squeak but it’s a mild, not at every stop and not loud. Do they need to be checked right away when I hear noise or is it safe to wait? Will it mean I need new breaks for sure? Does it depend on the model of the car or is there a good rule of thumb for all makes and models? First and foremost, brake inspections at certified auto repair locations will be offered at no charge. With that said, there are a few reasons that cause brakes to squeak. They could be completely worn out and need replaced or, it could be something as minor as brake dust or dirt buildup between the pads and the rotor. Every time you hit the brakes they loose a little friction material, and over time the material can get built up on the pad surface and cause a squeak, which is not a safety problem. Idle or Turn The Car Off, He Said She Said

I think it’s better for my gas mileage to idle my car while stuck in traffic or at a longer stop. My wife says it’s more ‘green’ to just turn off the car. It seems far less efficient to me to restart the car every time. Who’s right? Back in the old days, cars did use a large amount of fuel to start up, but these days your car is far more efficient. Cars today use electronic fuel injectors to control the amount of gas delivered to your engine when you turn the car on. Because of that, you waste very little, if any, fuel. That being said, if you’re going to be at a stop for more than 10 seconds or so, it is better to turn off the car. But bear it in mind it is illegal in most states to turn off your car at stop light, and it’s also dangerous as it increases the odds you’ll be rear-ended. It’s estimated that shutting off your car if you are idling more than 10 seconds daily can save up to about $34 dollars in fuel spending per year. It’s also better for the ... read more

Monsoon Driving Tips

Monsoon Driving Tips

Thanks to our friends at Neighborhood Auto Repair Specialists (NARPRO) for these timely rainy-day driving tips. 1) Slow Down - The posted speed limit may not always be the safest speed to drive during in-climate weather. Slower speeds allow for more stopping time and safer distances. 2) Pull Over - Dust storms are quite common during monsoon season. Try avoiding the roads if there is a dust storm or pull off to the side of the road if one hits unexpectedly. In the instance you are caught driving in a dust storm, be sure to drive with your headlights on and to slow down. If you need to stop driving, pull off the road entirely, try to avoid stopping in the emergency should area. Once off the roadway, turn off all of the vehicle lights and remove your foot from the brake so other drivers do not follow you. 3) Avoid Flooding - It is important not to drive through areas where the roadway has been closed by barricades due to flooding.
