The evolution of the electric vehicle

The evolution of the electric vehicle

It all seems to have happened so quickly. We are now on the verge of “self-driving” vehicles and electric car sales are significantly on the rise. One thing is for sure, the market is changing and technology and pollution issues are having a huge impact on how our vehicles run and also how they are repaired. According to one study in Norway, it is reported that all fuel-driven cars in the country will be banned by 2025. That is crazy to think about and while it seems pretty absurd right now, it is certainly not impossible. According to a report by the International Energy Agency, 2015 surpassed one million cars on the road with 1.26 million up and running. Just over 10 years ago, we were still measuring electric cars in hundreds. Here are a few key stats on hybrid vehicles you may not know from a study done by the University of Michigan; (Courtesy on Ratchet and Wrench) 80% of owners are over 50 years of age Just under 50% of owners have $100,000 yearly household incomes 80% are wo ... read more

Shop Profile: Destiny Destination “I didn’t want to have anything to do with it,” maintains Chris Garman, even though he ‘s co-owner of the Wilhelm Automotive chain of service centers in metropolitan Phoenix. “I wanted to be so far away when I was a kid it wasn’t even funny.”  Started in 1928 by Joe Wilhelm, Garman’s grandparents took over in 1978 what was then a single shop in Peoria. They had five sons, all of whom participated in the business; by 1988 Garman’s father began the process of expansion when he opened a second store. “On the weekends I’d go up to the shop and I would do anything and everything I could do not to actually touch a car,” Garman recollects. “I’d have to pull weeds, sweep and clean up.” But Garman was destined for the industry. “I was off at college when my uncle Thom approached me in 2000 with an opportunity to work for the family business and go to school ... read more

Squeaking Car Brakes

Squeaking Car Brakes

Here's a very common question we get about the noises the car brakes can make, and what they might mean. I notice my breaks squeak but it’s a mild, not at every stop and not loud. Do they need to be checked right away when I hear noise or is it safe to wait? Will it mean I need new breaks for sure? Does it depend on the model of the car or is there a good rule of thumb for all makes and models? First and foremost, brake inspections at certified auto repair locations will be offered at no charge. With that said, there are a few reasons that cause brakes to squeak. They could be completely worn out and need replaced or, it could be something as minor as brake dust or dirt buildup between the pads and the rotor. Every time you hit the brakes they loose a little friction material, and over time the material can get built up on the pad surface and cause a squeak, which is not a safety problem. Sometimes, a good rain shower, or going through a carwash ca ... read more

Idle or Turn The Car Off, He Said She Said

I think it’s better for my gas mileage to idle my car while stuck in traffic or at a longer stop. My wife says it’s more ‘green’ to just turn off the car. It seems far less efficient to me to restart the car every time. Who’s right? Back in the old days, cars did use a large amount of fuel to start up, but these days your car is far more efficient. Cars today use electronic fuel injectors to control the amount of gas delivered to your engine when you turn the car on. Because of that, you waste very little, if any, fuel. That being said, if you’re going to be at a stop for more than 10 seconds or so, it is better to turn off the car. But bear it in mind it is illegal in most states to turn off your car at stop light, and it’s also dangerous as it increases the odds you’ll be rear-ended.
